Lillian
All I ever wanted to be when I grew up was a mother. I also liked writing and seemed to be okay at it so I decided one day I would be a writer too, but that wasn't nearly as important to me as becoming a mother. I knew because of a metabolic condition I have that it would be difficult to become pregnant and it was. After three years of medicine and shots and doctor appointments and a miscarriage and hospitalization, we finally had the joyous experience of bringing a child into this world and we named her Lillian.
From the very beginning she was such a delight. She was easy going, slept a lot, hardly cried, loved to be cuddled and made everyone around her happy. As she has grown up, she has developed a fun sense of humor and is still very loving to those around her. Lily is intrinsically motivated to do well and likes to make her teachers happy. She is a good reader who devours books. She loves ballet, swimming, drawing and watching movies. She won't wear anything with a button or anything that she deems scratchy on her skin.
Lily has always been a very social kid. She had a best friend by age two and still loves to play with friends over most anything else. She used to ask me every day which friend we were going to see that day and would get upset if the answer was no one.
One of my favorite memories of Lily happened on her first day of kindergarten. I hadn't sent her to preschool for various reasons so on the day I had to put her on a bus for all-day kindergarten, I was a bit of a mess inside. I knew she was a bit apprehensive herself. It was the first time I wouldn't know what she was up to all day and she would be interacting with people I didn't really know. I was now beholden to a school schedule and her little brother was so lonely without her. It was difficult and we moped around all day missing her and wondering what she was doing. I had hoped she would be happy and love school and was anxious for her to get home and hear about her day. As she got off of the bus she ran over to me yelling as loud as she could, "MOM! IT WAS AWESOME!" Then she gave me a big hug. I instantly teared up because it was such a relief and so fun to see her so happy.
Lily is a wonderful older sister and is helpful and sensitive to other people's needs. One afternoon she could tell I was really stressed about something and without being asked she made lunch for her younger siblings. She lets them tag along with her when she goes to play outside with friends and is great at inventing games for all of them to play together.
I am grateful to have her in my life. We go through everything with her first and she is patient with us as parents and forgiving when we make mistakes. She is good at exposing my weaknesses and that allows me to overcome them. Lily is sweet and affectionate and obedient. She has a natural desire to do good and to help those around her that is such a blessing to our family. She is also a lot of fun to be with and enjoys exploring and trying new things. She makes me laugh, she has made me cry, but most importantly she has filled my heart with a new kind of love and given great purpose to my life, for which I am grateful.
