Curtis

I'm grateful for Curtis for many reasons. First off, he just showed up into this world. After years of fertility treatments to get our first, I thought it would be a challenge every single time. So imagine my shock when I was feeling kind of funny and thought I would take a test just for kicks only to see it positive for the first time out of close to fifty tests. He was our miracle baby and even though it was a real challenge to have two little ones so close together, as they've grown older, it has been a wonderful blessing.

Curtis loves to work with his dad and do outside projects and build stuff and fix things. One Saturday afternoon two years or three years ago I was watching kids for a friend and so our house was pretty full and busy. My husband was supposed to go help a different friend move and so I suggested he take Curtis just to alleviate some of the crazy. Turns out that he loves helping people move. As little as he was he held the door open and carried pillows and was thrilled about it. He talked about that experience for months and still loves going with his dad to help people move. I even had a lady from church comment on his enthusiasm and told me how Curtis proactively found things to do to help when the items that needed moving were too heavy for him. I am grateful that he loves to help others and finds joy in serving.

He is my quickest to cry over something or get upset and that can be frustrating but I'm grateful for his sensitive heart and think it will serve him well throughout his life. He is quiet and has a hard time doing things by himself and actually one of my worst parenting days ever was the day he started soccer as a three-year-old and big sister wasn't there to do it with him. But I am grateful that he loves his big sister and being with her so much and that they are such good buddies. I'm also grateful that in the end he gave soccer a try because it turns out that he loves playing sports. He is a quick learner and coordinated and doesn't get discouraged when he has to work at something. Even though he says he is better at soccer, he likes playing baseball more and I find that to be amazing. I've always liked doing things I was good at and was so impressed that he could like the difficult sport more. It is so fun to watch him play and work hard and learn a new skill without him worrying if he's the best or if he messes up.

When he cleans up his room, he does a fantastic job because of his wonderful attention to detail. He might not be able to find the shirt hanging in his closet literally right in front of his face but he is precise and careful in everything else he does. His handwriting is incredibly neat, he counts perfectly when practicing the piano and he has always been one to color inside the lines. He is a good friend and a wonderfully patient and helpful big brother. I appreciate how he loves to help me bake and always wants to make his own little version of whatever I'm making. He is sweet, loving, and determined. He makes me crazy sometimes but I adore his big, chocolaty eyes and long eye lashes and toothy grin and quick mind. I love how he can quietly play by himself with some cars and airplanes in an imaginary world all his own and appreciate his curiosity. Well, most of the time I appreciate his curiosity. I am grateful every day for this wonderful boy of mine and think that my gratitude for him will only grow as he does.
