Debbie
My sister Debbie has loved me since I was born. She is 11 years older and has a thing for babies so when my mom brought me home, Debbie was ready to have me move into her room. I suppose she learned quickly that it would be difficult at age 11 to actually take care of the baby but I love that story about our beginning.
She was the first one of my sisters to get married and I was 11 at the time and totally devastated. I liked her fiance and had in fact told him that he should get married (he was my primary teacher at church) so he decided to ask out my sister who was home from college for the summer. But I still didn't like the idea of her not being a full-fledged member of our family anymore. She'd have her own house and do her own vacations and that was tough for me and you can see me crying and hugging her in her wedding video. Perhaps because of that, Debbie and her husband, Glen, made great effort to include me in their life and it was wonderful to have them live just 15 minutes away. They let me sleep over and I spent lots of time watching Looney Toons with Glen and I decided it was okay for her to be married.
When their first baby was born, I was over a lot helping out and babysitting him. Holding my first nephew was a really special moment for me that I'll never forget. He was so cute with his fuzzy head and I remember holding him close and promising to be a great aunt, which Debbie let me do. I spent a week or two every summer after I graduated from high school and they moved away at her house playing with her boys. I always felt comfortable in her home and could tell she was happy to have me there. I enjoyed laying in the dark with my nephews and looking at their glowing stars on the ceiling and coming up with space stories and going to water parks and wrestling with them. I loved when they came to visit us while we lived in California and we got to show them around the Air Force base we lived near and take them to the Santa Monica Pier and especially to Disneyland.
She doesn't like to be wet when dressed though, which I learned after riding Splash Mountain with her. I had told her she wouldn't get too wet and it would be fine and worth it because it is the best ride at Disney. Unfortunately, she did get pretty wet and my favorite picture of the trip is her scowling at me with wet bangs plastered to her forehead after we came down the big hill. It just cracks me up; she is just too much fun to tease and believe it or not she went back to the hotel to change and dry off before she would ride any more rides with me.
I love making Debbie laugh and appreciate her calm and measured approach to life. She is feisty on the inside but is so good at holding her tongue. While relationships with my other sisters have had their ups and downs, Debbie has been consistent and while she may have been really upset with me at times, she has always seemed to forgive and move on without so much as telling me. She has a sensitive heart and that makes her a good listener and a good friend. She loves babies and is practically a professional baby whisperer. She has handled some very challenging circumstances well and raised great kids, doing so on her own the past ten years. I've always looked up to her and learned a lot from her while I was a teenager and young adult. I could ask her questions that I was too embarrassed to ask anyone else and she answered them and never made me feel dumb for asking. She is a wonderful mother and her example was important to me. I love her and am grateful to have her for a sister.
