Jana

Today is my friend Jana's birthday so it seems an appropriate day to be grateful for her. Jana and I met when she moved into the other half of our duplex about five years ago. I immediately liked her and knew that we could be friends. She is a calm, down-to-earth person and easy to talk to about anything. She is active in her faith and church so she can understands our very church-God-centered life, because she lives it herself even though our religions are different. She is supportive and kind and always offering to help me. She shows up when it is important and isn't uncomfortable socializing with my friends from church, which means a lot to me. She is wonderful at putting her friends above her own personal comfort and it has been a blessing in my life.

When we got back from Christmas break a few years ago, one morning she sent her girls off to the bus stop but didn't come out herself because she thought she had the flu. The next day her husband told us she had been diagnosed with leukemia and she'd been rushed up to the hospital in Bethesda. It was so shocking and I was so heart-broken for her and her sweet family, especially considering her husband had been diagnosed withe melanoma a few months before and was undergoing his own treatment. It was a very long six months of being in the hospital and not being able to be with her girls very often and dealing with so much pain, but she did it. She is such a warrior and so faithful and I was so amazed by how well she handled it all. I have never heard her complain or say anything negative about the experience. I know it was incredibly challenging but she handled it with grace and fought it well and it is a miracle today that she is healthy. You would never even know she'd had cancer if it wasn't for the little convertible her husband bought her that summer with the license plate NOMOCHEMO.

I owe it to Jana for my recent exercising goal accomplishment. She is the one that took me to the gym and let me try it out with her so that I would have the courage to sign up on my own. She goes just about every day and keeps me motivated and is helping me feel good about myself again. I'm so grateful that she assisted me when my laziness and anxiousness was keeping me from doing a good thing. That's just the kind of friend that she is though.

Jana has a generous heart and a positive spirit. I've never heard her speak unkindly about anyone or even express frustration. I'm so grateful for her steadiness and the positive example she sets for me. I love her dearly and am grateful every day that I can call her my friend.
