Week 27

I wonder when I will stop labeling each blog post by week. When will life not be marked by the start of the pandemic?

Anyway, it has been a pretty good week. Monday I did laundry, ironing, cut the grass, tried to can peaches and got six jars done before I decided to wait on the others because it was such a pain to peel them, helped the kids with school and then I taught the Wiests their piano lessons. I just started both girls and it is fun to teach kids I already like and it is fun to have a reason to see Leisa each week. We used to work out together and talk then, and hopefully we'll get back to that, but I like that we have scheduled time each week to at least see each other and catch up. We have even talked about doing dinner together some weeks so that will be fun. It was a really busy day and it felt good at the end of it to have accomplished a lot.

Tuesday I read all day. I was off by a week and thought I still had another week to finish my book club book (Lucky Boy) but I didn't so I started the book Monday night while Josh was watching basketball and read until 1am then I read from 9am-1pm when I finished the book. It was really nice and I only got interuppted a few times, which was pretty miraculous. I enjoyed the book and was glad I had finished it in time for book club or the discussion wouldn't have been nearly as interesting for me. Then I taught a few piano lessons, took Curtis to baseball practice and Josh took the girls to dance, then I had book club all evening. It was a great discussion and I love that monthly time to be intellectual and discuss something other than life and my kids with people.

Wednesday I did a body pump class on zoom through my gym and it felt good. I decided I was done canning peaches after six jars since they were still a pain to peel and many of them had gone bad and then I broke a jar in the canning pot. Overall, it was not a very successful canning experience this year (shocker) and since jars and lids are suddenly very difficult to find, I am going to take it easy on applesauce this year. Once everyone was done with their school work, we went shopping. We went to Kohl's to exchange pants for Curtis and ended up getting some stuff from the clearance rack. I got two sweaters and a shirt, Lily got two shirts, Emma got a shirt and Brandon got a sweatshirt all for the low price of $30! I had Kohl's cash and a coupon and it was already super cheap so I felt really good about that. By the time we were done it was getting late so I picked up Wendy's for dinner and then while Lily and Josh had their youth activities, I got the little two in bed then ran to BJs for milk.

Thursday it rained, which was devestating to Curtis because it meant his baseball scrimmage was cancelled and it was wet enough his game the next day was cancelled too. He had a hard week and at first I was really sympathetic but then by the end of the week I had to tell him to move on and deal with it. We can't wallow in our disappointment and be sad all of the time. He was moping around and I finally suggested he set up the wii (when we tore the basement up a month ago it got put away) and that has been a big hit all weekend with lots of racing happening on Mario Kart. Since I wasn't going to have to run off to practice, I had time to make homemade bread and stew and even peach crisp (had to get rid of the peaches!) and my family all loved it so much. It was a really nice evening with everyone so happy from good food. I also taught two piano lessons and Lily had dance.

Friday was nice because school is all asychronous so the kids don't have any meetings, just school work to get done. They got it done by the early afternoon so then they could just play and that was nice. Everyone has been doing a good job of getting their work done. Brandon whines about it a little bit but once I tell him to focus and get it done, he usually does. I know I would not be a good teacher. I was helping Brandon with his sight words and he just couldn't get like and it was so frustrating to me. We watched the video, we spelled it, we talked about it, we read a book with it in it and then when I showed it to him three minutes later, he couldn't remember it. Teachers are saints and I am so glad I don't have to teach my kids because they deserve better than me. I am pretty disappointed that the comissioner announced this week that they were putting a pause on our return to school plan because a few teachers have tested positive this week. So much for getting on the bus on October 5th. We'll have to hang in there for at least one more month. So it goes. We have gotten into a pretty good routine though and I think we are settling in. The toughest part is that Emma and Brandon both have specials and closing meeting in the afternoon when Lily is already done and I am wanting to maybe run errands with her but she is busy in the morning when they have a break. It works out in that she is super helpful with both of them while I am teaching piano some afternoons but does make it hard to go anywhere.

Josh walked in the door that evening with flowers for me and it was such a wonderful surprise and really boosted my spirits. I can't remember the last time he got me flowers when it wasn't my birthday or Mother's day and it was such a fun surprise. It made me feel very loved and helped to melt some of the stress away. I have been very stressed about school and the kids and he has been super stressed about work and the foundation issues and church, so individually we have been dealing with a lot and it has made us both tired and worn out. He hasn't been able to deliver on my Christmas (12 dates) or my birthday present (boating for a day) and we can't go on dates and rarely get any alone time so even just a simple gesture like getting me flowers really made an impact on me. He is pretty wonderful and I am very grateful for him and how peaceful and happy and supportive our relationship is.

Saturday we cleaned (well, I cleaned and the kids did some kind of version of cleaning) and then I went for a bike ride. Josh did some digging and stuff outside and fixed the hole the frogs had made over by our window well. We played some Mario Kart (Lily and Brandon playing together was especially sweet and cute) and then Lily and I went to Michael's so she could use her birthday gift card, we did a grocery pick up and then we picked up Potbelly to take on a picnic to Dorsey Park. Curtis and Josh played some baseball (and thankfully when the ball hit a lady's car it didn't dent it--insert head shaking here) while the others played on the park and I just chilled. It was nice.

Today we went back to church in five meetings of 25 people. We got the unlucky early slot of 9am but it was really nice to see friends and I really felt the spirit as I was playing the prelude music, especially during I Know That My Redeemer Lives. Josh was a bit nervous and he has stayed for all five meetings today to make sure it all goes well this first time through. Being together isn't tricky but passing the sacrament safely was a bit awkward but I am sure we'll get used to it. It is a beautiful day and fall is here and my house is decorated and cute and pretty clean. I am going to continue on my project to paint my hallway and put together my beach wall and the kids have off on Friday so I think we're going to go on an adventure. Life is marching along. We're starting the process of fixing the foundation and putting our basement back together this week too and I will be so happy to put all of that behind us. Nothing right now is ideal or even close to it but I think we're making the best of what we've been given.
