Week 10
Week 10 of pandemic quarantine and weird life is in the books. It was a pretty rainy week and a bit bleh but we made it.
Monday was laundry, ironing, figuring out how to return Lily's jazz shoes that were too small and all the regular stuff (piano, cleaning, school, exercise), then family night.
Tuesday was actually a busy day. I did a zoom workout from my gym and then I took Emma and Curtis to the doctor for their well check ups and we were the only ones in the office. I debated about waiting but Curtis needed his tetnus booster and it just didn't seem wise to put that off right before summer. If life was going to get back to normal soon, I would be willing to wait but it could be months and months and I just feel like life needs to go on as much as possible so I took them. It was quick and easy and they are both growing well and Curtis got his shot. Josh was even able to come home and do some work here so that I didn't have to take Brandon with me so that worked out. We got school lunch since we were right there and it was okay but I think I am pretty done with school lunches. That afternoon I taught three piano lessons and then Emma and Lily had dance, Curtis had his primary activity and I had book club. It was so exciting to actually have things going on but simpler than normal since none of us actually had to go anywhere. I really enjoyed book club and appreciate having a good discussion with women I really love and respect.
Wednesday was the normal stuff, I made a grocery list and arranged for a grocery pick up and then Lily and Josh had their youth activities. It was Sam's birthday and I had really wanted to help Leisa figure out a fun way to celebrate but we just couldn't make it happen with Josh's interview schedule. He and Lily sang and danced to start off mutual (hoping others would join in) but that was as much as we could do. Celebrating birthdays is tough under normal circumstances but especially under these ones. Maybe later we'll have to have a giant birthday party for everyone. I just really appreciate Sam and all he does to support Josh in his calling by doing his so well. I have a special love for these great guys (and Michelle) who do so much to make Josh's life easier, which in turn makes mine easier.
Thursday I taught a piano lesson in person! WOAH! It was crazy but so nice. It was great to see my student again and it was so fun to talk and actually be able to teach him for real. I have been debating about a recital and what to do and I still can't make up my mind. I like the idea of having the kids work for something and getting to perform but if they can't actually perform in person, it doesn't seem worth the effort. I only have six students, plus my kids, in five families. Maybe by the end of June we could get together but what if they prepare for a recital and then we can't? Doesn't seem quite worth the effort but my two older students have made awesome progress and I would love to be able to show them off. I suppose I need to make up my mind by Tuesday. In the mean time I am teaching two of my kids in person again and the other four still virtually.
Friday we had the normal stuff and then our Franklin Institute science class at 1pm. The guy that does them usually does the traveling science show that goes around to schools for assemblies and he is really fun. This week was all about electricity and he did a bunch of really cool demonstrations. Then Lily had dance and I had offered to take dinner to Sarah but didn't really have enough food since my grocery pick up wasn't going to be until Saturday. Whoops. So I ordered their family Potbelly because they have really good smoothies and soup, which is what Sarah needed. I am really bad at taking people dinner for some reason and ordering it and having it delivered was awesome, except that I didn't get to see them. After dinner we watched the British Baking show and ate a cake Lily had baked.
Then we started the second Star Wars movie with the big kids and I was reminded why I haven't watched it since its theatrical release. Could Annikan be more annoying? Why in the world does Padma fall in love with him when he is always complaining and sour and such a whiner? He drives me crazy and it ruins the whole movie for me. Perhaps if he actually was charming at some point I could buy in but he doesn't even have one moment where he isn't bothering me. Later Josh and I also watched The Martian and that is such a good movie. I love how smart he is and how he just works one problem at a time.
Anyway, Saturday we had pancakes, we power washed the patio and back of the house while Emma and Brandon made a water slide out of our play set, I went for a bike ride, and then I went to run some errands. Unfortunately, the shipping store was already closed, Bath and Body Works is still closed so no smelly soap for us, and so I popped into Target and miraculously found flour for the first time in 10 weeks! It was very exciting and I got two bags. There was hardly any soap but I got two little things of it and hopefully I can order some online from Bath and Body Works. Then I did my grocery pick up from Giant and they actually had everything I needed for the first time ever! I feel like hopefully we are on the downside of this mountian and on our way to a happy, normal valley. But most things still feel exactly the same for us. Other people are traveling and starting to do fun things and I still haven't even seen my friends in months or gone farther than 20 minutes from my house, and it was all still pretty necessary stuff. We talked about maybe going kayaking tomorrow but usually we do all that fun stuff with friends so I don't know if the kids will want to do it just us. Or do we go with friends? It is all so weird now. Our pool was supposed to open yesterday but obviously didn't but at least they were cleaning it out and getting it ready. I guess I just want to pretend summer isn't happening because I love summer so much and I was willing to give up my spring to all this weirdness but not so sure I want to give up my summer too. No ward picnic tomorrow, no soccer season, no big dance performance the following weekend, and if there was no pool and no friends all summer I think it would put us all over the edge, or at least me.
But I digress. Last night Josh made pizza rolls (a recipe I usually make but he was all into it so he did it and it was great--I love that his hobby involves making bread and food) and then we made churros. It has been on our list for a few weeks now and we finally did it. We used the Disney recipe and the new churro maker I got Josh for his birthday. I even bought dulce de leche to serve with them and I put on music from the Mariachi Cobres (the mariachi band that performs in EPCOT's Mexico) and we had fun. They didn't taste quite the same but it was still fun to do and try to pretend we were in Disney World for a few minutes. Then we put the youngers to bed and finished Star Wars Episode II with the olders. Josh and I then watched a little of The Tonight Show and a quick episode of Magic for Humans. Our friend recommended it to us and it is very entertainig. Sometimes a little weird but his magic is astounding and he is a pretty funny guy.
Today was a nice meeting where we reviewed Elder Holland's talk from conference on hope and then I did a fun primary music time where we played charades to guess the songs. It was pretty entertaining. Our sacrament meeting was on repentance and I think we had a really good discussion about the importance of repenting every day and quickly. Lily said but what if we don't want to tell you because we don't want to get in trouble? Good question and we talked about how important it is to let us help them work through difficult things. We reminded them that we love them and want them to be happy and feel peace and joy, which only comes through repenting or changing our poor behavior/bad choices so we will always support them in their efforts to do so. Now Josh is off being bishop and I am trying to keep my kids happy and engaged this afternoon. I am really excited for tomorrow and to have Josh home and to have a break from our "regular" routine. It is just going to be a family play day all day in whatever form that ends up taking.
