Recovery Week
Well, it has been kind of a weird week. We are so many iterations away from normal and I just felt kind of off all week. Josh has been doing pretty well. He has been pretty sleepy since Tuesday evening so he was just downstairs on the couch in and out of sleep all day and all night. Our big sectional kicks out and he kind of made a bed out of it but he could sit up when he wanted to and he had a bunch of pillows and blankets to keep him cozy. He watched a ton of cooking shows (pizza and bread) and basketball and football and a few movies. He was off the pain meds by Friday and felt pretty rough for a few days but is better now.
Today he is actually doing what he can to work (catching up on email and talking to the guys at work and I think doing a virtual meeting). He really needs to get into work at some point this week and that is going to be complicated but we'll figure it out. His follow up is later this week and I'm anxious to hear what the doctor is going to say. I came up with such a fun idea for Curtis's birthday but then it hit me that Josh isn't going to be able to do it so we'll have to save that idea for next year.
So the week was spent taking care of Josh and helping the kids with school and just keeping up with normal life. I started teaching piano again and took Lily to dance Thursday and Friday. The kids like eating dinner with Josh so we ate in the basement a couple of nights and watched Fixer to Fabulous.
Saturday for some reason I was just really sad and tired and so I did a lot of reading and just watching football with Josh. I think it was just a down day emotionally for no reason, really. I tried going for a walk and sat in the sunshine for a bit but just couldn't shake the heaviness. All Brandon wanted for his birthday was to play with Ethan, whom he hasn't seen in about a year, so we invited him over to play for the afternoon and both boys were so cute and happy, so that was good. Although it meant Emma didn't have someone to play with so she was kind of high maintenance that day. We did watch Snowball Express that night which is a classic Disney movie that I love so that was nice.
Sunday was much better though, mostly because we got to celebrate our sweet boy! I can't belive he is six. Although I can finally remember his birth without shivering so that tells me it actually has been awhile. We sang to him and had a quick breakfast and left for church. It was a great week. Both talks were awesome and it was wonderful to be in the building. I have been so proud of my kids lately because they sit so reverently by themselves while I am sitting at the organ for a good chunk of the meeting. Usually Josh is there to keep an eye on them but this week he was home resting and they were still super good. Definitely a blessing.
Anyway, I talked with Sam and Steve for a bit while we helped clean up the chapel and then we headed home and had a quiet afternoon. We talked to my parents and made our boy's birthday cake and played whatever game he wanted. Then we had chicken pillows for dinner and he opened his presents, which he was really cute about. He got some more magnatiles from my in-laws, a Paw Patrol truck from my sister-in-law, Lily made him the cutest t-shirt and then we got him some small Lego sets and a baseball thing. He loved it all and was so happy. It was such a low-key birthday but it worked for our low-key boy. He wore the birthday hat all day and was so adorable. We talked to my in-laws and had cake and then it was bed time.
Josh tried sleeping in the guest bed last night instead of the couch and it went pretty well and he has been upstairs just for exercise today, so that is progress! He still has a long way to go but every day is a step forward so that is good. He told me last night how useless he has felt and how bad he feels that he hasn't been able to help with the dishes or drive Lily home from dance or really anything but what I missed most this week was just having my buddy. Even though he was around, he couldn't really support me emotionally because he was pretty wrapped up in his recovery and on a lot of medication. It was really lonely but today he is more himself and I feel like he's back and it is wonderful.
Today's big adventure was going to the eye doctor. She said my eyes look super healthy and she wrote me a new prescription for contacts so I'm good for another two years. Kids did school, I taught piano, tried a new reicpe for dinner that was okay and then had family night.
