Costa Rica Days 4-5









 Josh loves the volcano and a lot of people told us how lucky we were that it was clear and we could see the top. It was actually clear every day we were there so we felt super lucky and Josh took a million pictures of the volcano or him and the volcano. It became a family joke how much he loved the volcano.

The next day we got picked up and taken to this place further up near the volcano called Sky Adventures. This is where Josh and Curtis went zip lining. I had considered it but there was no way the younger kids were going to do it and Lily was nervous too so they went off zip lining and the rest of us went on a guided hanging bridges tour. Our guide was super nice and good at finding animals hiding in the trees. We were at a high elevation and up in the canopy of the trees so that was cool, although a bit terrifying too. I had do deep breath my way across the bridges but the kids loved it. We saw sloths, two different varieties of toucans, a possum, a howler monkey off in the distance and spider monkeys up close. There were also a few snakes he pointed out to us and a tarantula but I chose not to look at that one. One of the toucans we saw flying around (so no picture) was a rare kind and there were some photographers up there trying to get a shot of it, which was cool. It was a nice hike and then when we got done we rode the tram up to the top of the mountain where the zip lining starts. We hung out for a bit and then rode the tram down and met up with Josh and Curtis, who loved the zip lining. Unfortunately no pictures since I wasn't watching them.

 

 

 

 

 

   

We went back to our hotel and decided we didn't want to pay for a taxi so we went to dinner at the restaurant across the street that had been so good and then we went swimming. It was cool to be in the warm thermal pools after dark and our family had one to ourselves so we were playing charades and just having fun together. It was so wonderful. 

The next day we didn't really have anything planned and it was nice to just have a relaxing day. We had no way to wash our clothes unless we wanted to pay for an expensive laundry service so we bought some soap at the grocery store and washed our clothes in the bath tub that morning. It was a good experience for the kids and brought back terrible memories of doing that for three months of my mission. I am so grateful for washing machines! We laid our clothes out in the sun to dry and went swimming for a few hours and just enjoyed the beauty of where we were. The resort had this volcanic mud you can put on yourself that was supposedly very good for your skin so we tried it out that day too. Then we went back into La Fortuna for dinner but some restaurants were closed because it was Good Friday so we ended up back at the one we had eaten at two nights before and it was so good. We also did a little souvenir shopping and walked around a pretty park and then we headed back. 


 


 


 


 


 


 


 


We loved it there in La Fortuna and appreciated what a unique environment it was and so beautiful and it was a great beginning to our Costa Rican adventure.

 December is always crazy and I always think, maybe we should cut back, but then I realize everything is related to service or is a kid activity they love so I guess it will just always be a busy month. For family night on Monday, Dec 8 we went down to Jason's house to help him out. He is Josh's co-worker and his wife is pregnant and just found out she has colon cancer. It is a very challenging situation so we wanted to help and he said the best way that night was to put up their Christmas lights. It was literally the coldest night of the year so we bundled up and told the kids they had better not complain and got to work. It took longer than we expected so we got home late but I think it was worth it and hopefully helped their five kids feel like things were more normal.   My mom and dad came on Dec 9 and we had a nice week with them. Party Time!

Friday, Dec 19 was our annual party. It started right after we got married when I decided I didn't want to plate a bunch of treats and have to go deliver them. It seemed so much easier and more fun to invite people over and just eat the treats at our house. So every year since 2003 (except 2020) I have hosted a Christmas party for our closest friends. In some places we didn't really have friends so we used it as a way to make new ones or serve our ward leadership. I used to do pretty much the same thing every year but now that we have lived here for almost 17 years, I've had to get more creative. I still make pretty much the same food with maybe one new something every year because it is fun to have tradition but also to spice things up a bit. We always have two games and then our gift exchange. I have done Family Feud, the newlywed game, minute to win it, all sorts of singing/music games including a lip sync battle one year, bunco, Jeopardy and then board games that I make...

Hello October

Pickle ball last week was super fun. I love ping pong but for some reason I have resisted getting into pickle ball but I really enjoyed it. We played for two hours and I had no idea so much time had gone by. It was fun to hang out with some ladies from church too and be competitive.  Saturday was our stake service project that Josh was kind of in charge of and it went super well. We had a free garage sale so we all donated stuff and a few of my neighbors did too and then Saturday people could just come take what they wanted/needed. I picked Curtis up from his long cross country run and got there a little after 10 and it was slow but steady for the next two hours with people coming in. There was still a lot of stuff but the estimate was that we gave away about 90 percent of what was donated so that's awesome.
