Done with school!

It has been a good couple of weeks. I took Lily to get her second vaccination, taught piano lessons, took the kids to the pool, did lots of reading, laundry, exercising and cooking. Last Tuesday afternoon we went over to the Shoeny's for one last swim and chat. I hadn't actually talked to Joni in a long time and it was nice to catch up but then we had to say goodbye, which is always sad. Friday we had planned to go to Six Flags on our way up to my sister's house but it was pouring rain. We decided to stop by anyway to pick up our season passes and by the time we got there the rain had stopped. We only had an hour but we went on about eight rides because no one was there. We walked right onto the rides and rode them by ourselves. Josh and I even did the Voodoo drop tower since the kids didn't have to wait at all for us and it was so fun. I wish we could have stayed longer but as it was we hit terrible traffic and were later getting to my sister's house than I told her we would be.

We had dinner and the kids went swimming for a bit and then Saturday we sat by the pool and talked and swam and ate all day long. It was nice and I'm glad we got to see Tatum before she leaves on her mission. She is supposed to go to Rome but her visa has been delayed so for the short term she is going to Little Rock and she leaves next week. We left right after dinner and put some very tired kids to bed when we got home at 9pm. Brandon had been in the pool from 10-5 with only a quick lunch break so he was pretty exhausted. I love that about summer.

This week was very busy. Monday I finally got my van back! Four weeks to the day from our little garage incident and thankfully I had a rental that whole time but I had to return it on Tuesday so it was good timing. Then I went and had lunch with my friend Laura who is moving to VA Beach. I haven't talked with her in so long and I'm glad we got to connect before she left. She was my first friend when we moved here. I met her when Lily and I would walk down the street to our mailbox because she would be out playing with her little boy and they lived right by the mailboxes. We haven't spent much time together over the last few years but she has always been a good listener and we get each other.

Then I ran a bunch of errands and that night was my piano recital. Michelle so very kindly made cupcakes for me to serve, which everyone loved. All my students played pretty well, although my older students made more mistakes than I would have liked but they both picked very challenging music and worked hard and it has been two years since they have performed so everyone did well considering. After everyone played their two official pieces I had everyone go back up and just play a song that made them happy and they all did well with that. Then we went outside and ate cupcakes and talked and it was really nice. The kids I teach are all nice, good kids and I like having neighborhood connections and relationships so even though sometimes I wonder why I am a piano teacher when I never signed up to be one, those moments help make it seem worth it. It was such a relief to have it over and I was especially proud of my kids who all played really well.

Tuesday I was also out and about running so many errands! I actually went for real grocery shopping for the first time in over a year. I took Lily to dance and helped the kids with school and got teacher gifts and took the kids to the pool so I could get ready for book club. It was our first in-person book club meeting since last February and it was great to be back together. It is so much easier to have a discussion in person and everyone liked the book I picked so that was good.

Wednesday morning was Curtis's fifth grade promotion, which I almost missed because our bus driver was late getting Emma and Brandon and his school is so far away. I had just walked up and they said his name so I literally caught it by seconds. It has been a tough year for him and we're all excited for regular school next year. I am not sad to say goodbye to his school since I have no connections there and have set foot in the building all of three times but I am not super excited about the early morning he will have next year. All of the kids in his program are moving up with him so even though he'll be in a new school, he'll have the same class of kids. Afterwards I went to the gym and tried to enjoy the last day my kids would be at school. I finally tackled a small painting job that when finished, made me very happy to have done. Then it was dance and church activities.

Thursday was the last day of school and ortho appointments and a ministering interview and then Lily hosted the young women in her class for a movie night, which I think all the girls enjoyed. She is a good little hostess and I did very little to facilitate the evening. It feels great to be done with school and I'm really proud of how hard my kids worked this year and how flexible they have been and resilient. Friday Curtis had a pool party in the morning in Leisa's neighborhood so I invited us over there to hang at her house during the party and it was nice. We haven't been able to sit down and talk just the two of us in a really long time, even though I have seen her often, so that was great. Then Lily had dance and after dinner we watched Luca, which I thought was cute.

Yesterday I had wanted to do something fun but we ended up just doing grown up stuff like mowing the lawn, getting the oil changed, laundry and packing for my trip with the kids this week. Josh had to write two ward emails and that took him forever. We went to Target to get snacks for the trip and then we got Nicolletti's to eat at home while we watched Full House. Josh has been watching a lot of the NBA playoffs and depending on which team it is, I watch or I've also done a lot of reading this week. I got really into my book and had a hard time putting it down until I finished it last night.

Today church was great because we could sing again so now I need to get back on top of my calling. We don't have a chorister or a primary pianist so I'll be filling in for now. We don't have many musical people in our ward right now and two brand new youth organists so it is going to be interesting for awhile. We made a big brunch for Josh and gave him his presents and now he is taking a nap, which he hasn't done on a Sunday in years (well, maybe he did last year on Father's day). I'm really grateful for Josh and what a dedicated, righteous, patient, kind and engaged father he is. I'm also very grateful for my dad and I am excited to see him tomorrow. He gave me such a wonderful life and so many opportunities. He read to me and taught me how to serve (he was in a church leadership position from way before I was born until I was 17) and played games with me and would just sit and listen to me play the piano. He is a gentle, sensitive father who listens and always makes me feel so good about myself. I am very blessed.
